NEW HAVEN, Conn— On Friday, May 12, 2017, the Foundation of the New Haven County Bar will honor the recipient of the 2017 Liberty Bell Award at its annual Liberty Bell Bash. The Liberty Bell Award honors individuals, including, non-practicing lawyers, and/or community organizations that have shown an extraordinary commitment to justice or provided outstanding service to the local community. This year’s award will be presented to Senator Chris Murphy.
The Foundation Board notes here a number of extraordinary examples of Senator Murphy’s service to our community and a commitment to justice. Senator Murphy’s efforts in championing bipartisan bills following the gun murders of children and adults at Sandy Hook elementary school here in Connecticut. Further, recognizing the troubling intersection of mental illness and the criminal justice system, the Foundation Board commends Senator Murphy’s leadership in a bipartisan effort to reform our mental health system, working across the aisle to craft the first comprehensive mental health bill in the Senate in decades. Recently, Senator Murphy has fervently vocalized the interest and responsibility of government to protect the rights guaranteed by the Constitution and ensure the sanctity of the rule of law in response to executive orders in January and March of this year. Further, as a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, he has been an outspoken advocate of international human rights and the protection of legal norms. As the Foundation President, Steve Jacobs, remarked, “Senator Murphy has stood out for his fierce commitment to improving our communities and protecting the rule of law. We are so pleased to honor him this year”.
